Yamile is doing really well. She has transfered to a new math class that is taking things more slowly. She is really enjoying her new after school activity which build self-esteem and works on exercise as well. She also loves bible study with Bob and Tammy. We have been working on Map skills together and on telling time. She is really improving on both. She is also developing her sense of humor and is now such a Tween. She has her Ipod and she walks around the house singing and she rolls her eyes at me on occasion. It’s great to see her developing her own personality. She is doing really well with Luna our seriously silly border collie german shepherd.
Jorge has been getting greens and purple in school. The best behavior colors. He is getting a lot of items from our home treasure box. He is also learning about the sounds letters make and if you say something like bbbb boy. He can tell you it begins with a B. He is also enjoying Luna but teases her and cries when she bothers him back. What a silly boy! He also enjoys bible study and loves his bible. He seems to like his new teacher this year and talks about Ms. Klein less than he did a few months ago. Ms. Klein was his teacher last year and we all just loved her. Jorge really likes Mrs. Bowman and he seems mildly more interested in learning this year.
Jim is doing well really busy. He is a great dad. The kids love him. He works at home a lot and sometimes they will just sit in his office with him while he works. We tried to take the kids to the movies this weekend (Jim’s idea) but nothing was playing yuck, so no movie.
I am doing well the kids, luna and Jim keep me busy.
PS Yamile got a new camera for her birthday and her pictures are pretty cool.
Good night and God Bless,
Gina
Hi Everyone,
Jim and I were driving together yesterday with the kids in the car - Bruce Springsteen was playing Born in the USA and Yamile and Jorge were singing at the top of our lungs. Jim leaned over to me and said did you ever think this would happen. He meant us, the kids, our lives and I said honestly no. I lost faith so many times, Jim never did though he had faith in it all.
In the last years Jim and I both moved to houston seperately. I graduated school. Jim and I met, and married. We moved in together, we moved across town. Jim’s mom died. We adopted two children. We moved to Virginina. We got a dog. Jim’s daughter graduated high school. The kids have learned English, started school. It has been a real rollar coaster - very exciting.
Right now, i feel like i finally have a minute to just BREATH.
Yamile is enjoying 5th grade. She has had some minor problems. She can’t manage to open her locker in time for classes. This really bugs her. A few kids have teased her this year. Overall, she is happy though. The work is hard especially since she is so behind everyone else and they really believe she should be with kids her age instead of where she is developmentally. I think she would be better suited in a 3rd grade or even 4th grade class.
Jorge is doing ok in Kinder he got sent to the principals office. We have sent him to see a counselor and she does not think there is much she can do. She said he is very bright and very opinionated, a difficult combination…
Luna our new dog is getter bigger and Yamile is really great with her. Yamile also loves her new cousing Cira (sounds like Kyra) very much. She can’t wait to see her in a few weeks.
Good night and God bless,
Gina

Yamile had some kind of bizzarre after lunch tantrum herself. She ran around and would not listen. She is suspended for 2 days.
What has come over my children. They are normally really good. They have not been sleeping well so tonight we sent them to bed at 7:15pm. We are going to keep this early to bed schedule for a while and see if that changes anything.
They were both very sorry for themselves when they had to come home and clean their rooms and not play and think about what had happened.
Good night and God Bless,
a very tired Gina
Yup,
It has been quite a while. Things are going well here in Virginia. We really like it here. The people are so nice. I do admit though that I miss my friends, Monica, Heather, Lee, Sharon. I feel like I really don’t have any way to make new friends, working only part time. Usually I make friends where I work. This part time thing though leaves very little time to actually get to know the people that I am working with. Oh well…..
The kids have made friends. Jorge talks about Sonya, Kalvin, Ariana in school a lot. It’s nice. Yamile also talks about the kids in school, Unhye, Sayid, and many others. It is really nice to hear that the kids are bonding with those around them.
Our land lord died recently and they may sell the house we are renting. I hope if they do we can buy it or move to a house in the same area. I don’t want the kids to have to go to new schools. Like I said they are beginning to make friends and it is really really great.
Good night and God Bless,
Gina
It has been a long time since the last blog- life has been good. I have been working part time. the kids are enjoying their new lives, Jim has been busy teaching. Tommorrow is going to be a big day for us. Yamile has been talking a lot lately about wanting a new nose. She has actually started to pull on hers to make it “perfect” - just like Jorge’s. I tell her I love her nose so does her daddy but it is just not enough. I know that she will require several more operations in her lifetime and it makes me kind of sad to think we have to start so soon. I also concerned that they may tell her nothing can be done until she is 12 or 16. That will be hard for her to hear.
In so many ways she is doing so well. She loves her school and really has become connected there. She recently became really upset hearing that some of the kids are going to be moved into their “home” school. Academically she was ready to do to but we thought socially it would be better for her to stay one year in one school.
She is in a special program at a different middle school for children who are recent arrivals to the US. It is great 12 or less students and two teachers. She is learning so much. Jorge is doing great. He is just learning so much about the US, he fits right in. He is a little ball of energy.
Good night & God Bless,
Gina
Yup,
It’s been a really long time. We have been crazy busy. Jim likes his new job.Right now he is in San Diego. We all miss him. My mom and dad have been staying with us for several days now. We are really enjoying the time together. I am doing fine. Really busy, working several jobs. I like them but it feels like a lot.
Yamile is doing really well. She loves her new school and her English is awesome now. She really enjoys her class. There are lots of kids from different countries so she is learning a lot about other cultures and is helping the teacher by translating for some of the kids who speak Spanish. Her report card was great and so has her behavior been. Her classroom is so creative. Every week they learn a different poem and the one teacher brings in a guitar and teachers the kids English through songs. Yamile loves “this land is your land” She loves lunch especially the “fish sandwich” She talks about it a lot. She also loves going to the school library. She really enjoyed her first her first field trip. They went on the city bus to the local farmers market and bought pumpkins and gourds which they decorated.
Jorge is doing well too. Jorge likes his school but he has some trouble focusing. He loves school actually especially his friends. He really likes his field trips as well. We have gone to the pumpkin patch and to a nature perserve. He like both but loved riding the school bus.
Good night and God Bless,
Gina
Hi Everyone,
School is going great this year for Yamile. she is in the Newcomer class and loves it. There are 3,4,5th graders together.Several are Spanish Speakers, two are Russian, one Chinese and one Italian. Yamile is really helping the teacher b/c her English has gotten so good. She is helping to translate for some of the students. Her classwork seems to be on her level of ability also. She read a story in English about watermelon, one of her new favorite foods.
She is loving our house and all the space especially the carport where she rides her bike and scooter almost daily. Jorge loves it too.
Jorge is doing well except at circle time. He just does not get it. He is fine during work when he has to sit by himself and work on a project but group activities, he just does not get. On a positive note he is happy to go to school everyday. He enjoys eating breakfast and lunch with the other kids.
He loves the pond, so does yamile. There are ducks which they love to stuff with duck food, fish which they try to stuff with duck food, and turtles who don’t like duck food. It is very pretty there and I really enjoy so does Jim.
Right now I am only working a few hours a week so I have lots of time to spend with the kids. They really like it but I confess, I miss working. I would like to work about 25 hours a week. Enough to pay the bills and have lots of time for them.
Goodnight and God Bless,
Gina
They tested Yamile and want to put her in 5th grade 3even though she failed 2nd in Texas. I spoke to the counselor at the middle school and explained our situation. I am going there tomorrow to give them some of Yamile’s standardized test scores and for them to meet her. I am let her know that if they want to try Yamile in the school for a week and then move her that would be fine or if they discuss her situation and and decide to move her ahead of time we are fine with that too. I think Yamile will be best served in 3rd grade. I am only going to work part time this year to help her so she could possibly do forth grade but everyone I spoke to about it (three psychologists, one counselor and lots of family don’t think she will be able to handle the work and I agree).
Keep up in your prayers
Good night and God Bless,
Gina
We have been busy bees. The kids are enjoying their new home in lovely virginia. I am enjoying unemployment for the time being. I am starting a part time job in about 3 weeks. If anyone knows of any employment opportunities for a clinical psychologist in or near Harrisonburg please drop me a line : )
Lets see we have been looking about pre school for Jorge, we think that we found one. We liked the two we saw but the one we chose has a lower child to teacher ratio. It is located in a church. Renee our new neighbor told us about it. She is really really nice.
The kids really love the neighborhood and the park near it. Yamile just got a new bike for her birthday and we got Jorge a inexpensive big wheel. He is still too small to ride his bike. Yamile’s bike is Hannah Montana, her hero.
On a rather strange note, the Welcome Center in town tested yamile and decided to recommend 5th grade for her. Mind you she failed 2nd grade this year. They say they want her with he age cohorts, I and Jim are really concerned. I can’t imagine her in 5th grade, the school is HUGE and brand new. She still has problems with the most basic of math, I mean 5 plus 10. She just can’t do it. I want her to be successful and right now I am putting it in God’s hands. I will give the school district the info they need about the Yamile and just let his plan come to action.
Good Night and God Bless,
Gina
